“Sad”: Tony Mowbray discusses his frustrations with this week’s training at Sunderland.

Important Update Emerges On Sunderland Star’s Contract

Sunderland could lose out on a significant chunk of money in January, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly set to land up to 50% of any fee received for winger Jack Clarke should he depart the club.

The 22-year-old has been in sublime form for the Black Cats this season, netting seven goals in 11 Championship appearances. He is the club’s top goalscorer and needs just two league goals to match last season’s tally of 11.

The former England under-20 international was subject of heavy interest from Premier League outfit Burnley in the summer, with the Clarets seeing multiple bids rejected which eventually totalled over £10 million. It was claimed earlier this month that the Wearside club are holding out for £15 million for the attacker and Vincent Kompany continues to hold an interest.

It was inevitable that Clarke would attract attention from the top tier, particularly after Sunderland’s excellent form since returning to the Championship. Tony Mowbray guided his side to the play-offs last season, only to lose in the semi-final to eventual winners Luton Town. This campaign has started in similar fashion and they entered the international break sitting comfortably in fourth.

The attacker completed a permanent move to the Stadium of Light after a successful loan stint from Tottenham Hotspur in 2022. According to TEAMtalk, his former club stand for a significant windfall should a move to the Premier League materialise in January after inserting a sell-on clause into the deal which took him north.

Although exact figures are unknown, it is claimed that Spurs could be due up to 50% of any potential fee, with Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers all circling. Sunderland, however, will be keen to rebuff any approaches as they target promotion themselves.

Meanwhile, there is a hope that they can bring Amad Diallo back to SR5 on a second loan spell. The Manchester United winger is likely to be granted another temporary spell away from Old Trafford, and he is said to have made it known that his preference would be to once again link up with Tony Mowbray.

Sunderland will be bracing themselves for bids for their star man in January, and this latest news makes their valuation of the player more understandable. Whilst £15 million was previously claimed, the report states that that figure is now closer to the £20 million mark.

If Tottenham’s sell-on clause fee is to be believed, that would mean the Black Cats land £10 million for themselves, which would add to the war chest they received when they sold striker Ross Stewart to Southampton in the summer.

However, the player will not be in a rush to depart the Stadium of Light and may well opt to see if he can achieve promotion to the Premier League before making any decision on his future.
