Sean Dyche explains main reason for feeling ‘really disappointed’ after Everton defeat

Everton manager Sean Dyche reacts after 2-1 home defeat to Luton Town in Premier League

Sean Dyche said his players were well aware of the threat Luton Town would pose from set pieces despite being unable to thwart the danger.

The newly-promoted side secured their first win of the campaign after scoring from a corner and a free-kick to leave Goodison Park shell-shocked. Those in Royal Blue had received a warning with the game goalless as Luton captain Tom Lockyer thundered a header over the bar after meeting an early corner.

Lockyer made Everton pay minutes later when he reacted quickest after Carlton Morris sent a header goalwards. Morris then hammered home when unmarked from a free-kick – just seven minutes later.

Dyche conceded both were soft goals as he acknowledged his disappointment as Everton’s run of home defeats was extended to four matches.

Asked whether he was frustrated those on the pitch had failed to heed the initial warning and identify and deal with Luton’s set piece threat – and who that responsibility fell to – the Blues manager said: “The fact is we made them [the players] well aware like all teams do, not just us.

“Everyone has all of the analysis you could ever imagine. They are well aware of what Luton are trying to be about, and I respect that, they know it is a challenge. They are well aware of set pieces, well aware of the organisation, well aware of just working super hard.

“If you don’t do it, it doesn’t go your way. You can only rely on pure talent so many times. You have got to do all of the ugly stuff, all of the ugly details, which we have done in the last two games. But I just feel really disappointed mainly in the fact this was a chance to stamp our authority on a game, change the story, the crowd are waiting, to be fair to them, they are desperate for us to change the story, they are with us.

“And they [the players] don’t do it. We hit the bar, hit the post, miss a chance, don’t get in the box, and all the rest of it and then concede two softish goals.”
