The Hull City players at Portman Road before the game with Ipswich Town

Jacob Greaves delivers key Hull City verdict after Championship’s 10-game point

The Tigers hit the 10-game marker in midweek with a below-par showing at Ipswich Town

Jacob Greaves believes Hull City’s start to the season was a couple of wins away from being classed as excellent after the Tigers reached the 10-game mark in midweek.

Liam Rosenior’s side went into Tuesday’s clash against high-flying Ipswich Town with just one defeat in eight with that coming across East Anglia at Norwich City on the opening day and in hugely controversial circumstances. It was a run which included away successes at Blackburn, Leicester and Stoke along with credible home draws with Coventry and Leeds United and a thumping win over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Unfortunately for City, that unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt at Portman Road against a Town side who moved back to the Championship’s summit, albeit only for 24 hours before Leicester City reclaimed it on Wednesday.

Following a terrific 3-1 win at Stoke City, the Tigers went fourth in the league before dropping to fifth with a frustrating home draw – their fourth in a row at the MKM Stadium – against Plymouth Argyle last weekend and now they sit ninth in a congested table ahead of Saturday’s trip to Millwall.

A win could see them return to the top six for the international break, but defeat to the 14th-placed Lions would see them leapfrog City and leave Rosenior’s men in the bottom half.

“I think the first nine games we’ve had have all been positive,” Greaves tells Hull Live as he reflects on the job done thus far. “The Plymouth game the other day watching from the naughty step, the boys were terrific in the second half and there was only one team that looked like winning it. In the second half of games, we’ve shown our fitness to run over the top of teams – Coventry, Leeds, games we should have won, the Leeds game definitely we should have won.

“It’s unfortunate. We’ve had a good start. I don’t think we’ve had an excellent start because we should be higher than what we are and this is one of those nights where it’s happened and we’ve just got to show a reaction. I don’t remember being beaten as convincingly as that since the gaffer has come in. Don’t get too down after defeats and we’ll stick together as a team.”
