Callum Wilson shares exactly what happened in the Newcastle dressing room after Sunday
ur days after the game and Newcastle United’s loss to Liverpool still hurts.
The Magpies were beaten in dramatic fashion in front of their own fans on Sunday. They were 1-0 up against 10 men, yet threw the game away to lose against a side who they have formed quite the rivalry with.
Newcastle had plenty of chances to kill the game off, and were punished for not taking them. Liverpool completed a dramatic turnaround, with Darwin Nunez scoring two sensational goals to turn the game on its head and snatch victory away from Newcastle.
St James’ Park was absolutely stunned, with Toon fans still struggling to comprehend what they witnessed at the weekend.
The players will no doubt feel the same, and Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has shed some light on the immediate reaction inside the dressing room after the 2-1 loss.
Callum Wilson admits Newcastle players were in shock
Wilson has appeared on the Footballer’s Football Podcast and discussed what happened in the immediate aftermath of Newcastle United vs Liverpool on Sunday.
“After the game I was like ‘what has just happened’,” he said.
“The whole stadium was in absolute shock. We were in shock.
“We come in and didn’t have any words to say. It was like ‘what has just happened, that was the maddest 10 minutes ever’.
“Ultimately, I’m there thinking ‘I’m not even playing right now’, and I’m coming on the pitch and we concede two goals. I need to have a good look in the mirror!
“But it’s a team game. We win together and lose together.”
Great chance to bounce back after Liverpool loss
It is no surprise to hear how stunned the Toon dressing room was. The fans felt the same.
But it is now up to the players to bounce back, and they have the opportunity to do just that on Saturday night. Eddie Howe’s side are on the road this weekend, travelling down south to face Brighton.
It is going to be a very challenging game, but it would be a great one to win heading into the international break. Our performances have been decent, but we could really do with putting another three points on the board. That is easier said than done against anyone in the Premier League, let alone Brighton.
But it is a chance to respond, and a chance to put things right. Wilson will particularly keen, as he looks to make the most of every minute he gets as he continues to play second fiddle to Alexander Isak.
