Report: Zach Cunningham will miss Eagles-49ers game and possibly longer
Eagles linebacker Zach Cunningham will miss Philadelphia’s Week 13 game against the San Francisco 49ers and could be out for “possibly longer,” according to a report from Jeff McLane.
Cunningham suffered a hamstring injury during the Birds’ Week 12 win over the Buffalo Bills.
This development is obviously bad news for the Eagles since Cunningham has played like the team’s top linebacker this season. His absence means the team is down to two healthy off-ball linebackers on the active roster: Nicholas Morrow and Christian Elliss.
Morrow has played reasonably well relative to low expectations but he’s able to be exploited. Elliss had a role on defense early in the season before being demoted to strictly special teams duty. Cunningham’s injury forced Elliss back on the field for defensive snaps and the Bills didn’t hesitate to go after him.
The Eagles are reportedly interested in signing Shaquille Leonard, who is expected to visit the NovaCare Complex on Wednesday. Even if the Birds end up inking him, it’s unclear if he’ll be able to play as soon as this Sunday.
And so it might just be Morrow, Elliss, and Ben VanSumeren (who will likely be signed to the roster now that he’s out of temporary practice squad elevations) going up against the 49ers.
