PL club still want to sign 21-year-old Chelsea star, he’s rejected them once before – journalist

Premier League club Burnley retain interest in signing Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen.

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Jacobs reports via GiveMeSport this week that Chelsea want Ian Maatsen to sign a new contact with them, but they could be forced to sell him in January if he doesn’t extent his stay. This is because his current deal expires at the end of the season.

In addition, Burnley are still keen on signing the 21-year-old Blues star even though he rejected a summer move to Turf Moor in the summer transfer window.

Maatsen enjoyed a fantastic 2022/23 campaign during a year-long loan at Burnley, playing a key role in them winning promotion from the Championship as title winners.

However, the Dutch speedster opted against a return to Burnley and decided to fight for his spot at Chelsea this season.

Most will recognise him as an attack-minded left-back, but he’s spent this year so far playing higher up the pitch for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The Telegraph recently claimed that Pochettino has been impressed by Maatsen so far this season. There’s question marks regarding his future, though.

His versatility has seen impress as either a winger or a No 10, but so far all his cameos in the Premier League have come off the bench.

We would be interested to see him getting an opportunity at left-back while Ben Chilwell is sidelined through injury, but Levi Colwill has that spot in the XI nailed down for now.
