New Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl eager to give Owls identity in survival scrap
Danny Rohl insists he can turn the club’s fortunes around
Sheffield Wednesday’s new boss Danny Rohl insists he can turn the club’s fortunes around after becoming the Sky Bet Championship’s youngest manager.
The Owls, bottom of the table, sacked Spaniard Xisco Munoz last week and former Bayern Munich assistant manager Rohl has replaced him in his first role as a head coach. The 34-year-old, whose playing career was cut short by injuries, said: “I prepared the last 10 years for this situation and now the dream comes true to be here.
“I think I’m very well prepared. I have a clear identity in my mind. I have a clear philosophy and this is the reason why I’m here now. Now we have to create something. We have to create an identity, what we want to play, how we want to play. This is very important for me.”

Rohl, the Owls’ 11th permanent manager in the last 12 years, has previously worked as assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl at RB Leipzig and Southampton before working under Hansi Flick at both Bayern and the German national team. He told Owls fans that with their help he wants to turn Hillsborough into a fortress.
“We will do our job and I’m convinced we have a massive fanbase behind us and with our style of football in the future we can create so much energy,” Rohl said. “We want the opponents to come here and feel: ‘Oh! Wednesday are back!”
Spaniard Munoz, 43, who won Premier League promotion as Watford boss in 2021, replaced Darren Moore at Hillsborough in July and was dismissed last Wednesday after failing to win any of his first 10 league games in charge.
Moore had guided Wednesday to promotion via the play-offs last season, but departed by mutual consent three weeks later and has since replaced Neil Warnock as Huddersfield manager. Wednesday were held to a 0-0 home draw by Moore’s Huddersfield last week and remain winless after 11 league matches, but Rohl insisted he was not daunted by the challenge.
