‘Unreal’ player wants to leave Manchester City for Newcastle United

Kalvin Phillips has struggled for playing time at Manchester City following his move from Leeds United in the summer of 2022, and it seems that the midfielder has now made up his mind to leave.

According to TEAMtalk, Kalvin Phillips is keen to leave Manchester City and join Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old England international midfielder is “keen on the move” to Newcastle “as he wants more first-team football in the lead-up to Euro 2024”.

TEAMtalk has added that Phillips is not in the plans of City manager Pep Guardiola, claiming that the midfielder has been told that he is free to leave.

My View: Manchester City should be wary of selling Kalvin Phillips to Newcastle United

Now, I understand why Manchester City would be willing to sell Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window.

It has simply not happened for Phillips at City.

Described as “unreal” by West Ham United star Michail Antonio, Phillips is a peripheral figure at the Citizens.

Phillips has played only 70 minutes in the Premier League this campaign and made just two starts in the league last season.

So, yes, City should just cut their losses on a player they paid Leeds United £42 million for.

However, the defending Premier League champions should not sell Phillips to Newcastle, if they can help it.

Newcastle are a renewed force in English football and could challenge for the Premier League title this season as well as in the coming years.

Selling Phillips to Newcastle would only make Eddie Howe’s side better.

There is speculation that Bayern Munich want to sign Phillips.

Perhaps City should look to offer the midfielder to the Bundesliga champions instead.
