He has also had to stay behind at the club’s Enfiled training base during the international break but is back in training ahead of Monday night’s game.

Manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed his injury was not serious before the international break and the expectations are that he will be able to feature at some point in the London derby: “I’m not sure with Brennan, it seems like he felt something, I think his hamstring. We’ll assess that.

“We are hopeful it is nothing major but we always have to be careful and we will not risk him.”

Tottenham also have injury scares from skipper Son Heung-min and Cristian Romero even though there is growing optimism that both have not picked up long-term injuries and at least one of them should be able to feature after they are assessed this week.

Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil could also feature for the first time or at least from the bench having both missed a chunk of the start of the campaign due to injury.
