Town’s Championship opponents fire the manager, and a Man United icon will replace him.

Ipswich Town: Championship rivals Birmingham City axe boss

One of Ipswich Town’s Championship rivals have announced a shock move to sack their manager.

Birmingham City controversially parted company with John Eustace, who had been in charge of the club since July 2022.

The 43-year-old guided the Blues to a mid-table finish in his first full season in charge (2022/23), despite being tipped as the bookies favourites to finish bottom of the league due to off-field issues.

A club statement confirmed: “It is essential that the Board of Directors and the football management are fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire Football Club

“With this in mind, Birmingham City has today parted company with Head Coach, John Eustace.”

Birmingham were subject to a takeover bid over the summer as Shelby Companies Ltd purchased a controlling stake in the club and full ownership of the stadium in July 2023.

Their summer recruitment looked strong, and Eustace guided them up to sixth in the Championship before getting sacked – winning five, drawing three and losing three of his 11 games in charge this season.

Reports suggest that Manchester United legend and former Derby County boss Wayne Rooney is poised to take over, having resigned as manager of DC United over the weekend. Meanwhile, Eustace is the bookies favourites to replace Michael Beale at Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

Ipswich are due to face Birmingham at St. Andrew’s on November 4th.
