Tuesday: Harriers v Oldham
A look ahead to tonight’s Aggborough meeting with Oldham Athletic
RISS Penn wants to use Oldham’s recent revival as an example as Harriers host the Latics at Aggborough on Tuesday night.
The Reds go into the clash looking for just a second win of the season and on the back of a sapping 2-1 defeat at Eastleigh on Saturday.
It’s not the first time in recent history that Harriers have been feeling low on confidence, and history has shown that a turnaround is often just around the corner.
While Harriers can show that example well enough, Tuesday night’s visitors can do the same. A poor start to Oldham’s season saw them dispense with the services of Manager David Unsworth.
Under the stewardship of caretaker chief Steve Thompson, they’ve won their last two matches 2-0 and 4-0 respectively – proof that a boost in confidence can work wonders.
In his programme notes prior to Tuesday’s clash, Penn says: “They may not have had the start they’d have wanted to this season, but they have shown in recent weeks the kind of confidence you can get from a couple of wins and what that can do for you in terms momentum.
“We need to take that example, stay positive, work hard and I’ve no doubt that the results we want will come. I’ve been saying for a few weeks now that we just need that moment.”
Harriers meet Oldham tonight, around a decade after last hosting them in The FA Cup when The Latics were a League 1 side.
Any sentiment or feelgood factor should be banished immediately, says Penn, who added: “For us to be able to entertain Oldham at Aggborough in a league game is an indicator of how far we’ve come as a club in recent seasons, but the honeymoon period of being promoted back to this division was well and truly over many weeks ago.
“We aren’t interested in just being here to make up the numbers, we want to try and be competitive and to achieve things.”
That 2002 Cup clash ended in a 2-0 win for Oldham and was one of only two prior meetings between the two sides, the other being way back in 1907 – another Cup tie that saw tonight’s guests progress.
Going into Tuesday night’s game, Harriers will again be without Matt Preston and Shane Byrne through injury.
Jack Lambert also missed Saturday’s Eastleigh defeat with a quad issue.
Kick-off at Aggborough on Tuesday night is 7:45pm.
