Giants Named Top Landing Spot for $16 Million Three-Time Cy Young Winner

The San Francisco Giants have a hole to fill in their rotation after watching Blake Snell exercise his player opt-out to become a free agent. While the southpaw could re-sign with the club on a new deal, many options are available on the open market. Could three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer be a legitimate target? The veteran right-hander has been effective since the start of 2023 for the New York Mets and Texas Rangers, posting a 15-10 record with a 3.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 214 strikeouts. His biggest problem has been staying healthy. Scherzer has tossed 196 innings across 36 starts during this time, essentially missing a full year of playing time because of multiple stints on the injured list.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller ranked the Giants second on a list of 10 top landing spots for Scherzer. He’d help fortify the back of San Francisco’s rotation while acting as a mentor for hurlers like Kyle Harrison, Hayden Birsong and Landen Roupp.

“San Francisco does want to make at least one big (read: expensive) splash this offseason, but it seems to be eying hitters on that front, namely Willy Adames and the pipe dream of convincing Juan Soto to leave Yankee Stadium’s short porch in right to play in a much more cavernous stadium,” Miller said. “Scherzer at around $15 million could be right in the wheelhouse of their pitching budget.

Spotrac projects Scherzer’s market value at $15.2 million, while MLB Trade Rumors is predicting he’ll land a one-year, $16 million deal.
