Welbeck is under contract with Brighton until 2026 and the ex-Three Lions star has scored 32 times in 138 appearances for the Seagulls.

The former Watford striker insisted that he is ‘focused’ on what he can control and that the noise around a sensational Old Trafford return is only “speculation.”

“It’s speculation and there’s always that link for me because I’ve been at the club,” Welbeck said.

“As I said, I’m just focusing on what I can control myself and all the other stuff is pretty irrelevant.”

Welbeck on injuries in his career

Welbeck has impressed in the Premier League this season and the Brighton star has scored six times and registered two assists in 11 league matches.

The former England and United player committed his future to the Seagulls back in the summer after he inked a new deal until the end of the 2025-26 season.

Welbeck admitted that he is “happy” with his overall career and stressed that injuries are a part of football and it’s down to the player to handle them.

“Overall I’m happy with my career,” he said.

“You can always want more, but injuries are part of the game and you just have to handle them.”

Welbeck added: “There’s been times where, pfff, I don’t know, I’ve spoken to specialists, like maybe after injury or having to go to surgery and they’ve said things like, ‘It’s going to be really difficult,’ or, ‘You might not get back to the level.’ That sort of stuff.

“It’s not easy but that’s when you knuckle down and go again. You have really bad days but you have to remain positive. I don’t think sitting around moping is going to help you.”
