Southampton and Ipswich eye ‘unplayable’ forward with more goal contributions than Cole Palmer this season

Premier League duo Southampton and Ipswich Town are watching Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku but they face competition from Burnley and Scottish giants Rangers.

Dwight Gayle, Ivan Toney and Britt Assombalonga are among those who secured big-money moves after making their name with Posh, while Southampton have already gone shopping for bargains at London Road.

The Saints snapped up young defender Ronnie Edwards from Peterborough over the summer.

And TBR understands that Southampton are now keeping tabs on Kwame Poke, alongside an Ipswich side who have former Posh forward Sammie Szmodics in their ranks.

Szmodics opened the scoring as Ipswich ended their wait for a Premier League win at Tottenham on Sunday.

Southampton and Ipswich Town eye Peterborough’s Kwame Poku

London-born Ghana international Poku has taken his game to a new level in the opening months of 2024/25.

Stepping up brilliantly following the sale of Ephron Mason Clarke to Coventry City, he is close to emulating his goals tally from the whole of last season already.

Poku stormed into double figures with a lethal hat-trick during Saturday’s 6-1 hammering of Cambridge United, ensuring that he has averaged either a goal or an assist in each of his 17 appearances this term.

TBR have been told that, in addition to Premier League newcomers Southampton and Ipswich, there is interest from two clubs among the Championship’s chasing pack. Burnley have struggled for goals under Scott Parker at times, while Millwall are the second-lowest scorers in the division’s top eight with only 18 from 15 matches.

TBR can also confirm that Rangers had scouts in attendance as Poku destroyed Cambridge at London Road. Philippe Clement’s Europa League challengers are one of the clubs in pursuit of Wrexham flyer Ryan Bennett too.

Poku, meanwhile, is due to become a free-agent next summer as things stand.

As such, Peterborough are desperate to agree fresh terms with a man who claimed League One’s Player of the Month award for both September and October.

Poku’s Peterborough stats put him level with Cole Palmer

“Kwame is just unplayable at the moment,” manager Darren Ferguson tells reporters. “I would hate to play against him. He needs to give someone else a chance of winning player of the month! They’ll have to rename it the Kwame Poku Trophy!

“The boy is unplayable at the moment, he’s just so good. He deserves all the plaudits and all the credit. That’s why we had to keep him in the summer.

“There were offers for him and there will be more offers for him. We’re trying to keep him and have offered him a new contract. Me and the chairman are trying our best, but it will be very tough and you can see why.

“If you watch him, the stats don’t lie. I’m just enjoying working with the boy.”

A signing from Colchester United back in 2021, Poku is a left-footed right winger who likes to cut inside.

No player has more goal contributions in England’s top four leagues, meanwhile, with the silky 23-year-old wideman is taking his placing alongside Chelsea talisman and fellow leftie Cole Palmer at the top of the charts with a pinch of salt.
