Leicester City vs Chelsea injury news as 3 ruled out and 9 doubts
Chelsea return to action this weekend when they take on Leicester City in their first game back after the final international break of the calendar year. The Blues are currently in third place, and they will see this game as an opportunity to build momentum in their bid to land a Champions League spot this season.
Enzo Maresca has had pretty good luck with injuries so far this season, and he will be hoping that stretches into the new year, while Steve Cooper could do with some of that luck rubbing off on his side. Here we round up the early injury news surrounding both sides.
Bobby Decordova-Reid – Doubt
Cooper said of Reid before the break: “He picked up quite a nasty wound in the League Cup on his Achilles. It keeps opening up when he tries to go to the next step. We’re hoping that can heal quickly but he hasn’t been out on the grass with us yet so he’s probably doubtful for the weekend.” It’s likely Reid will be available this weekend.
Patson Daka – Doubt
Cooper has said: “He had a serious injury that ruled him out for 3-4 months and we just have to be careful. It’s tempting just to throw him straight back in, but at the same time we don’t want to do that to the detriment of getting him fully fit.” Daka could be in contention for this one.
Jamie Vardy – Doubt
Vardy is another who will be battling to be in contention, with Cooper saying: “Vards is a little bit inconclusive. He picked up a back injury at Ipswich and struggled to shake it off, so we’re still seeing how that goes in terms of how long he will be out for.”
Jakub Stolarczyk – Doubt
“[He] had a similar injury [to Daka]. His rehab is slightly different, with him being a GK,” Cooper has said. “He’s able to be out on the grass a little more, still with the medical and rehab team. He’s in that same period towards the final stage of rehab.” The Keeper could be in contention but may not be risked just yet.
Ricardo Pereira – Out
Pereira has struggled with injuries over recent years and he will be out for another long spell. Cooper has said: “Ricky is more conclusive. It’s a serious muscle injury that will rule him out for 3-4 months, so it’s a real blow for everyone, especially him, and it’s a bad time, but now we need to support him with his recovery.”
Jordan Ayew – Out
Ayew remains out with a knee injury, and there is no clear timeline for his return.
Issahaku Fatawu – Doubt
Fatawu has been out with a small injury but it’s not clear when he will return.
Jadon Sancho – Doubt
Sancho was suffering with illness before the break. He should return here, but Maresca will confirm his availability later this week.
