Marc Guehi saga set for January twist after summer talks between Newcastle and Palace
In the transfer saga that never ends, Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo is reporting that Newcastle will make a ‘fresh approach’ for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi in January.
It’s claimed that the club are keen to ‘future-proof’ Eddie Howe’s defence and there are ‘growing suggestions that Palace’s stance over the centre-half is set to shift.’
Encouragingly, Wilson’s report also states that Newcastle will not be returning with the ‘same offer’ (around £65-70m) that was rejected at the end of August, as numerous factors – especially his remaining contract length and the player’s refusal to sign a new deal at Palace – have significantly reduced his value.
Despite the tongue-in-cheek opening of this article, Guehi would be an excellent signing at around £35-40m. A centre-back pairing of Sven Botman (24) and Marc Guehi (24) would potentially provide a partnership that could last for the next ten years injury and form permitting, with Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall also pushing to partner Guehi at international level.
Yet, with how jaded many supporters became with the tedium of the drawn-out transfer saga in the summer, it would be wise for United to get any deal wrapped up ASAP if one is to be pursued in January. It would also be a bad look for Paul Mitchell and the club if another negotatiation and series of bids ended without him signing once again.
Scott Wilson is also reporting that Miguel Almiron is increasingly likely move away from St James’ Park in January after just one Premier League start so far this season.
His agent, Daniel Campos, has been speaking to Paraguayan TV this week on Miggy’s future, saying: “Almiron has a valid contract. The link was renewed last year for three more (years, to 2027), and with the new owners of the club. Miguel does not despair about money issues or doing crazy things, but if there is an offer from a team, we will go through the appropriate channels.”
Personally, I wasn’t aware of Miggy’s contract extension, yet the report also outlines how Boca Juniors and River Plate have registered an interest in signing the player. Still valued at €20m on TransferMarkt, if a potential sale of Miggy could pave the way for Guehi’s arrival, and ease PSR issues, most fans would probably be happy with that trade as Almiron’s stock has well and truly fallen this season due to a lack of gametime and starts.
