Coventry City agree deal with Mark Robins replacement, announcement due this weekend
Coventry City have reached an agreement to name Frank Lampard as their new boss, according to Football Insider.
Coventry City have been on the lookout for a new boss after the controversial decision to part ways with legendary manager Mark Robins.
The Sky Blues have endured a dismal 2024/25 campaign to date with much more expected from their talent group. However, given his service to the club, many believed Robins had plenty of credit in the bank and deserved ample time to turn things around.
Owner Doug King and his fellow decision makers didn’t align with that belief though and as such, they’ve been searching for their Robins heir. Plenty of names have been linked, including Frank Lampard.
Now, after intense speculation, Football Insider claims that Coventry City and Lampard have agreed a deal for the 46-year-old to be named their new manager.
It is claimed an announcement will be made this weekend, after the game against Sheffield United. It means Rhys Carr will lead the team again on an interim basis after a 2-2 draw with Championship leaders Sunderland in his sole game to date.
The deal marks Lampard’s return to the dugout since departing Chelsea in the summer of 2023. He had endured a tough stint as their interim boss following Graham Potter’s sacking.
A gamble from King
It was definitely a gamble from Coventry City and owner King to get rid of Robins. But arguably, moving to bring Lampard in as his replacement is even more of a risk.
The former Chelsea and England legend has a decent amount of experience in the dugout but the jury is still out on just what sort of managerial career lays ahead of Lampard.
He got Derby County to the play-offs in his sole season with the club before heading to Chelsea. He faced a tough job in tricky circumstances and performed fairly well, but when it came to kicking on, Lampard struggled and was sacked.
He then inherited a struggling Everton group, who he just about led to safety. Again though, when it come to looking back up the Premier League, form never came and he was relieved of his duties.
The caretaker Chelsea return wasn’t the most representative given the dismal shape they were in at time, and that brings us to the present day. Lampard will be determined to prove the doubters wrong, but it’s definitely a gamble from Coventry City.
The first game
While Carr leads the Sky Blues against Sheffield United, it would be assumed a weekend announcement means Lampard’s first game as boss comes in midweek.
A trip to promotion hopefuls Burnley awaits Coventry City on Tuesday night before a quick turnaround to face Cardiff City at the weekend. That clash with the Bluebirds would be his first home game at the club.
Time will tell just what the coming days hold, but it seems Lampard to Coventry is a done deal.
