What Crystal Palace have told Marc Guehi as Newcastle United eye early January transfer
Newcastle United are braced to make a fresh move for Marc Guehi in the January transfer window.
The Crystal Palace centre-back is still on the Magpies’ radar, with Newcastle set to make a fresh move for Marc Guehi.
This comes after Paul Mitchell tried and failed to sign the England international during the summer transfer window.
But Newcastle United are going to try again in January, with Eddie Howe still in need of centre-back reinforcements. Emil Krafth’s injury has highlighted Newcastle’s need for more defensive cover, with Guehi still top of the Magpies’ wanted list.
Marc Guehi remains Newcastle United’s top transfer target
That is according to TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about Newcastle United’s interest in Guehi ahead of the January transfer window.
“From my understanding, if Newcastle could pick one centre-back to sign, it would be Marc Guehi,” he said.
“But it will not rumble on for the whole of January. If a deal is not possible, they will move on quickly.
“He’s a player who Newcastle United love and have done the background work on. It cannot be underestimated the work that has gone in on Marc Guehi.
“There is a certain type of character that Eddie Howe likes, and he loves Marc Guehi. Newcastle really do like him, and it is no surprise that they are going to go back in for him.
“However, Newcastle are doing their due diligence on alternatives.”
What Crystal Palace have told Marc Guehi
During the summer, Crystal Palace strung the Magpies along. It feels like Steve Parish never had any intention of selling Guehi to Newcastle, as the saga was played out through the media.
However, it could be a different story in January, as Guehi enters the final 18 months of his contract at Selhurst Park. With no new deal on the horizon, it appears that Crystal Palace are resigned to losing their captain at some point next year.
I think they [Newcastle] will make a move in early January,” Bailey said.
“Is Guehi going to agitate for a move? No, but he is not going to sign a contract extension either.
“Crystal Palace have told Guehi that they will sell him in 2025 if he does not sign a new deal.”
That could play into Newcastle’s hands, as Crystal Palace prepare to become more willing sellers.
The Eagles obviously want to get the best deal possible, which could make a January transfer all the more likely. If they wait until the summer, Guehi will be worth even less, as he would be entering the final 12 months of his contract.
But as was the case in the summer, Newcastle will only do a deal for the right price. And while alternatives have been analysed, it once again feels like a case of Guehi or nothing when it comes to the Magpies’ centre-back search.
