4-2-3-1: How Coventry City could line up under Frank Lampard amid appointment rumours

Coventry City are on the hunt for a new boss and rumours over an agreement with Frank Lampard have been intensifying.

Coventry City made the shock decision to part ways with Mark Robins earlier this month and have been on the lookout for his permanent replacement since.

In the meantime, Rhys Carr has been leading the Sky Blues on an interim basis. He has overseen back-to-back 2-2 draws against promotion hopefuls in Sunderland and Sheffield United.

Speculation has persisted over who could be next but last week, it was reported that an agreement had been reached to name Frank Lampard as the new boss of Coventry City. An announcement has not been made yet and it seems Carr will be in charge again on Tuesday night against Burnley, but a conclusion to the hunt is not far away.

With that said, here, we take a look at how the Sky Blues could line up under Lampard…

Lampard’s go-to setup

For much of his managerial career to date, Lampard has opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, or something similar at least. At Everton he had to adjust somewhat and wasn’t afraid to field a three-man backline with wing-backs.

However, for the most part, he plays with a four-man defence and one striker.

Coventry City have bounced between formations a bit this season. Wing-backs have been deployed with a three-man defence in recent weeks but the start of the campaign saw Robins utilising a 4-2-3-1 or a variation of that setup.

The personnel recruited are capable of going between a four-back and a wing-backs setup, but Lampard’s tendencies point towards a 4-2-3-1, or perhaps a 4-3-3 with one midfielder sitting back and one given freedom to attack.

How Coventry City could line up

Dovin; van Ewijk, Thomas, Binks, Dasilva; Sheaf, Eccles; Sakamoto, Rudoni, Wright; Simms.

This lineup does not account for any Coventry City injuries or suspensions, but it’s arguably the strongest side the Sky Blues could field with a squad of fully available players.

The goalkeeper position needs to be nailed down and it should be summer signing Oliver Dovin’s to keep. In front of him, Joel Latibeaudiere and Liam Kitching are contenders to start at centre-back, but Bobby Thomas and Luis Binks have looked stronger.

Milan van Ewijk and Ben Sheaf are just about undroppable, as is Jack Rudoni. The latter could really thrive under Lampard given the boss’ goalscoring ability from midfield during his playing career, so he could have plenty of expertise to pass down.

The sidelined Haji Wright is a far on the left and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto would be able to start in this four-man backline setup with van Ewijk at full-back rather than wing-back.
