National media tears into Newcastle star Alexander Isak after what he did v West Ham
Newcastle United were brimming with confidence before Monday’s home game, as they were coming off a run of three consecutive wins in all competitions.
However, the Magpies were brought back to earth by West Ham United who outclassed them 2-0 at St James’ Park.
Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges, but the visitors took the lead through Tomas Soucek’s header against the run of play.
The goal boosted their confidence and they went on to score another in the second half, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka driving a shot in off the far post.
West Ham won by a comfortable scoreline in the end, with the result dropping Eddie Howe’s team to 10th in the Premier League standings.
The national media delivered a condemning verdict on Newcastle’s display, as they missed several scoring chances and were very vulnerable in defence.
According to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Alexander Isak was the “biggest culprit” for the home side.
He handed the 25-year-old a 6/10 rating after he twice missed the target from good positions.
Hope gave the following verdict on Isak: “Isak was the biggest culprit, even though that feels harsh given he was Newcastle’s most dangerous player. But on two occasions of note he lashed wide from good positions. With four goals in as many matches, they were the sort of chances he has been taking of late”.
Isak has been in superb form since returning from injury last month.
The Sweden international entered Monday’s game on the back of four goals in four matches across all competitions.
However, he failed to continue his momentum against West Ham and squandered two brilliant opportunities.
The striker did put the ball in the back of the net early in the game but it was ruled out for offside.
Isak will hope for a better display when Newcastle take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park next weekend.
