Sunderland transfer round up with striker wanted, Chris Rigg latest and more

The January transfer window is rapidly approaching. For Sunderland, it’ll be a pivotal month in their race for promotion to the Premier League.

Sunderland have lost their spot at the top of the Championship table to Leeds United, who sit above the Black Cats on goal difference.

Last time out, Sunderland drew 1-1 against Millwall at The Den, conceding a devastating injury-time equaliser as Regis Le Bris’ men dropped another two points.

There’s some cracks starting to appear at Sunderland and some January additions may be vital in keeping the promotion push alive.

Here we round up all the latest Sunderland transfer news in the build-up to January…

Regis Le Bris makes January transfer window admission

Speaking before the Millwall game, Le Bris gave his verdict on Sunderland’s January transfer window, suggesting that he was focussing on the current team instead.

Le Bris did suggest that there are some weak spots in the current first-team squad. But in his latest presser ahead of the West Brom game on Tuesday night, Le Bris said that he doesn’t think there will be any additions in the winter window.

He said: “At the minute, we are still finding out about new players in new positions… We will have three or four more players during December, so I don’t know if (reinforcements) will be needed.”

Tommy Watson attracting Premier League interest at Sunderland

There seems to be a growing number of Sunderland players attracting Premier League and top flight interest ahead of January, and Tommy Watson is the latest.

Brighton were interested in signing Watson in the summer transfer window and reportedly had a bid rejected for the Sunderland academy man.

Since, the 18-year-old has started twice in the Championship for the Black Cats. But an emerging report from TBR Football has revealed that Watson was watched by Spurs during the draw against Millwall, with Crystal Palace and West Ham also monitoring the winger.

Chris Rigg interest ramping up ahead of January

One Sunderland player attracting serious interest ahead of the January transfer window is Chris Rigg.

Manchester United are heavily linked with Rigg who is under contract at Sunderland until the summer of 2027.

Now though, the same report from TBR Football (above) has revealed that there were a number of scouts at The Den also watching over Rigg.

Arsenal, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Spurs, and West Ham were all taking a look at 17-year-old Rigg, who has so far featured 15 times in the Championship this season, scoring three.
