It is believed that Frank Lampard is at the advanced stages of securing his new job as Coventry City head coach

Frank Lampard is edging closer to being appointed at the new head coach of Coventry City – and the deal could even happen in the next 24 hours.

Lampard soared to the top of the bookmaker’s lists as the front runner for the job, last week. Now it seems the Sky Blues board are ready to name their man.

Doug King has been working behind the scenes doing due diligence on all candidates and interviewees as the club look to move on from the controversial sacking of Mark Robins.

As we reported last week, Lampard was thought to be in advanced talk s with the club and the former Chelsea, and Derby coach is now in the process of finalising terms ahead of talking over at the CBS Arena.

Lampard hasn’t managed since leaving Chelsea and his intern position at the end of the 2022-23 season and is now ready to step back into the fray. The Telegraph claims that King has connections to Lampard’s uncle, Harry Redknapp and claims that Lampard could even be in charge for the home game against Cardiff City on Saturday.

Journalist Alan Nixon has also backed Lampard to be named and has revealed that Joe Edwards will be his number two. He writes: “Coventry City plan to name Frank Lampard as boss today – with old pal Joe Edwards set to join him as his number two.

“Edwards has been out of work since leaving Millwall but was previously part of Team Lampard at Chelsea and Everton.

“Lampard has been in talks for some time but the target was a debut against Cardiff on Saturday after a difficult double header with Sheffield United and Burnley.

“Edwards is respected within the game and will play a major role as Lampard leans heavily on him for his input.”

Rhys Carr was due to speak to King today to find out whether he is required to continue in charge for the weekend.

It comes after Steven Pressley gave his backing for Lampard as a “good fit” for Coventry as speculation intensifies around the appointment of Mark Robins’ successor.

The former Sky Blues boss was special guest on Sky Sports’ lunchtime coverage of Saturday’s match when City battled back twice to earn a 2-2 draw against joint Championship leaders Sheffield United.

Show host David Prutton asked: “Frank Lampard is the man being touted as the next City manager. We saw a taste of what he did in the Championship with Derby County. From a playing point of view there’s a huge stature with this particular man and an aura with him, but does he bring the requisite skill set to be a success at Coventry City?”

“I think so,” answered Pressley. “You know when you look at Frank there’s a little bit of an untrue narrative around his managerial career thus far. He did a very solid job at Derby, leading them to the play-offs, and then I think we shouldn’t underestimate how well he did in his first reign at Chelsea. You know, he had difficult circumstances, had to work with a lot of young players and I think he led them to fourth in the Premier League.
