• Surgery is reportedly still a possibility for Trevor Lawrence.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could potentially get Trevor Lawrence back for the game against the Houston Texans in Week 13. However, a trusted NFL voice reports that there’s another scenario in which the fourth-year quarterback isn’t good to go and undergoes season-ending surgery to repair his shoulder.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN broke the news that Lawrence could try to play through injury but could ultimately undergo surgery if he hasn’t recovered enough.

“Jacksonville is in a tough spot with Trevor Lawrence (shoulder), who has wanted to play through his injury and help the Jaguars rebound. But their 2-9 record and inevitable changes after the season loom large. Jacksonville will see how Lawrence feels mid-to-late week before making any decisions, but if the team shuts him down, surgery would seemingly be on the table.”

Lawrence suffered a shoulder sprain in Week 9 that’s forced him to sit out the past two games. Following the injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media said he would weigh in on his options, which led to speculation about No. 16 getting a procedure done. He tried to shut it down, but based on Fowler’s report, it looks like it remains on the table.

Reading between the lines, this is a fluid situation. Lawrence had an extra week of rest during the team’s Bye and returned to practice ahead of the Texans game. Head coach Doug Pederson met with the local media Monday and said the Jags would see how the former Clemson Tiger does in practice before deciding whether he’ll play.

Pederson got back to the press corps Wednesday and called Lawrence’s first day at practice encouraging, pointing out that he didn’t have any setbacks but wasn’t ready to commit just yet.

Trevor Lawrence gives the Jacksonville Jaguars a tough decision

The Jacksonville Jaguars could certainly use Trevor Lawrence in their six remaining games. His absence exposed just how dreadful it is without him. Backup quarterback Mac Jones filled in for him, and they mustered just 13 points in the two games.

The fact that the Jags still have a slim chance to make the playoffs may incentivize Lawrence to push through injuries. Then again, they would have to run the table to have a shot, and a loss to the Houston Texans in Week 13 would put an end to any hopes of making the postseason. This puts the quarterback’s availability at center stage.

Should the Jaguars expose Lawrence to further injury to have a shot at the playoffs? Doug Pederson would certainly be the biggest beneficiary of the quarterback’s potential return. After all, the head coach is currently on the hot seat and is in a position to get the boot at some point in 2024 or next year. However, he may keep his job if Jacksonville does make the playoffs, as unlikely as it may be.

The bottom line is that Trevor Lawrence could end up playing against the Texans. On the other hand, nobody should bat an eye if things don’t go the way the team expects and he misses the rest of the season.
