How Newcastle United feel internally about Bryan Mbeumo ahead of the January transfer window
Newcastle United could solve their right wing issue by signing Bryan Mbeumo.
The Brentford forward is enjoying an outstanding season so far, while Eddie Howe continues to search for the solution to his right wing conundrum.
Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Joelinton, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron have all played out there at times this season, but none of them have proved they can thrive in that position.
That is why they need to sign a right winger in January, with Bryan Mbeumo considered a dream signing for Newcastle.
Signing Mbeumo would delight Newcastle supporters, while it would also please a Toon legend. Alan Shearer recently said Mbeumo is the best player in the Premier League’s bottom half.
Newcastle have two Bryan Mbeumo concerns
But while Mbeumo feels like he would be a good fit, there are concerns inside St James’ Park.
That is according to the Athletic, who report that Newcastle believe a deal to sign Mbeumo from Brentford would be ‘expensive and complicated’.
They add that the Magpies are also looking at options further afield. Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle are fans of Johan Bakayoko, a Belgian winger who plays for PSV Eindhoven.
Domestic transfers will be a problem for Newcastle in January
Mbeumo is slightly older than Newcastle would want at 25-years-old, while his form for Brentford would result in the Bees commanding a huge fee.
That would make a January deal difficult, as the Magpies continue to remain wary of profit and sustainability.
Given their PSR concerns, it is no wonder that Newcastle United are keen to recruit players from overseas.
Domestic transfers are becoming more and more expensive, while clubs are also reluctant to sell to their rivals. And even if they were interested in selling, a departure during the middle of the season is much less palatable.
Newcastle also like Bournemouth duo
Those are some of the reasons why it could be a challenge for Newcastle to sign Mbeumo, while there could be similar issues with two more players who the Magpies like the look of.
Geordie Boot Boys have been told by TBR Football insider Graeme Bailey that Newcastle United are fans of Bournemouth duo Antoine Semenyo and Marcus Tavernier, but the Cherries have no intention of letting either player go in January.
“Newcastle liked Tavernier when he was at Middlesbrough,” he said.
“His brother [James] was at Newcastle obviously, and he trained with them when he was 12 or 13. He’s a terrific player who has done brilliantly at Bournemouth.
“I know Antoine Semenyo has been linked but Tavernier might suit Newcastle a bit more right now. They are both being watched by Newcastle.
“However, Bournemouth have got bigger ambitions at the moment and neither will be leaving in January 2025. They are backing Andoni Iraola, who is a huge fan of both players.”
With domestic targets either too expensive or unattainable in January, it is no wonder that Paul Mitchell is keen to widen Newcastle United’s recruitment net and sign players from elsewhere.
