Significant Mark Robins update emerges amid potential Hull City appointment
Hull City managerial contender Mark Robins is open to the job on Humberside but wants to be offered the post rather than go through the interview process, as per Alan Nixon.
Hull City are on the lookout for a new boss after making the decision to part ways with Tim Walter earlier this week.
The decision was one many felt was a long time coming. The decision to sack Liam Rosenior and bring Walter in as his replacement was a much-contested one in the summer, and unfortunately, Acun Ilicai’s call did not pay off in the slightest.
After a defeat to Middlesbrough under caretaker boss Andy Dawson, the Tigers sit 22nd in the Championship table with just 15 points from 18 games. Though play-offs were the aim, a fight against relegation is a more feasible prospect at this stage.
It means a big job awaits the next Hull City boss, and the newly available Mark Robins has been heavily linked.
Now, writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon says the job is something Robins would be open to. However, there’s a catch.
Robins wants to be offered the job by Hull City, rather than go through an extensive interview process. To this stage, the Tigers have been taking applications and receiving CVs from contenders, and it seems Robins has no intention of going down that route.
Will it work?
Perhaps you can understand why Robins wouldn’t prefer such a process. He’s freshly out of a hugely successful stint at Coventry City and he’s still held in extremely high regard despite his poor start to this season and subsequent sacking.
As such, he would be a real coup for Hull City, perhaps one they should be actively pursuing rather than merely hoping he applies. Robins may also favour being the top target identified, rather than just one of multiple names up for consideration.
However, the interview process is a key one.
It’s an important process where the relevant parties can figure out whether they’re on the same page or not, also helping them keep options open and avoiding putting all their eggs in one basket.
As such, time will tell just what Hull City think of Robins’ stance.
A big job ahead
This Hull City squad is certainly capable of far more, but with injuries to key players and a tough summer transfer window, dragging them away from the bottom three won’t be as easy as many think.
Robins has proven himself as a firefighter in his managerial career to date but he also showed he can take ambitious clubs to the next level, as he did with Coventry.
He’d be the ideal appointment for Hull City, but it remains to be seen just what this saga brings.
