Coventry City: Frank Lampard will be watching Man Utd, Gyokeres news very closely

Coventry City may have had struggles on the pitch this season, but they will be delighted to hear the latest news regarding Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swedish striker signed for the Sky Blues on a permanent contract back in 2021 and has to go down as one of their best deals in recent history.

In his first season in 2021-22, he netted 17 and built on that the following season with 21 goals and 12 assists as they reached the play-off final.

Making the move to Sporting Lisbon in 2023, Gyokeres has since exploded with a ridiculous return of 67 goals in 71 appearances. This was under the stewardship of Ruben Amorim, but with the Portuguese manager departing for Manchester United, links have begun to circle about an attempted approach from the Red Devils for the Swede.

This would appear great news for Coventry’s new head coach, Frank Lampard, who could be getting a big boost to his summer 2025 transfer budget with his side holding a sell-on clause of 15% on any profit Sporting make on Gyokeres.

With a record surpassing every striker in the world at the moment, it is no surprise to see clubs across Europe attempting to bring Gyokeres to their doorstep.

However, yesterday’s (03/12/24) latest update from Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg revealed that United are now in concrete talks with Sporting over a potential move in the summer. It is believed that this requires player sales, but with Amorim sure to streamline his squad, this would prove a minimal issue.

According to TeamTalk, Gyokeres has an £83m release clause in his contract, which would likely have to be met if he were to depart the José Alvalade Stadium.

With the Sky Blues’ sell-on clause in place, they stand to earn a significant £12 million – nearly matching the fee they received when they sold him in the summer of 2023.

This could prove of real benefit to Lampard and would be a huge boost to Doug King’s ambition of securing a return to Premier League football for Coventry City.

At present, the current season seems somewhat of a write-off over a potential play-off push, with Coventry sitting in 16th place, 12 points off sixth-placed Watford.

Despite this, the squad Mark Robins has assembled in recent years should comfortably avoid the threat of relegation and this should give Lampard sufficient time to plan for 2025-26.

If Gyokeres does make the move to Old Trafford next summer, then Coventry’s pockets will be well-lined and this should allow them to sign top-quality second-tier players. This level of funding, combined with Lampard’s extensive footballing connections, creates an ideal platform for a transfer window as numerous individuals would surely be desperate to work under the stewardship of the Premier League great.

While the core group should still remain, making additions around the likes of Ben Sheaf and Milan Van Ewijk has to be the priority at the CBS Arena.

The summer of 2025 promises to be an exciting period for Coventry fans, potentially serving as the pivotal transfer window that takes the club toward a serious promotion push.
