Rumour is rife United manager Daniel Farke will let Gelhardt leave Elland Road when the transfer window reopens next month. Several EFL clubs are reportedly keeping a close eye on his situation.

The Whites’ promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion are believed to be keen on signing another attacker in the New Year to boost their hopes of securing a top-six finish. The Baggies, managed by former Whites coach Carlos Corberan, have dropped out of the play-offs after a poor run of results. Corberan’s side are now eight points off Burnley, who currently occupy the second automatic promotion berth.

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes the Baggies should look to sign Gelhardt on loan to increase their attacking firepower. “I would say there’s nothing to lose by going down that route [Gelhardt], really,” Goodman told West Brom News. “Very different type to [Josh] Maja. Very easy to see them playing in the team together, rather than it being one or the other.

“He’s another one. He’s a little bit like Maja in that he wants to kickstart his career again because it hasn’t really worked out for him at Leeds United. I know he had a little loan spell at Sunderland and there were glimpses of what he was capable of. But he’s another player that just needs to sort of reset and go again, really.
