Coventry City ‘pushing to sign’ German defender with £1.6 million release clause
Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as the Sky Blues have been linked with interest in an experienced left-back currently playing in the USA
Coventry City have been linked with interest in German defender Kai Wagner, who is currently plying his trade in the USA with MLS side Philadelphia Union.
The 27-year-old, who has an impressive 12 assists and one goal so far this season, is also claimed to be wanted by Championship rivals Burnley as well as Italian Serie A clubs Atalanta Bergamo and Parma who, it is said, have already made inquiries for his services ahead of the January transfer window.
The left-back is also, according to Sky Sports Germany-based reporter Florian Plettenberg, of interest in the Bundesliga and Spain. Plettenberg, who has almost 400k followers on social media platform X, posted: “Burnley and Coventry are pushing to sign Kai #Wagner.
“The 27 year-old left-back from Philadelphia Union with a contract until 2026. But there is a release clause for this winter amounting to €2 million.
“Atalanta Bergamo, and Parma have also expressed concrete interest and have already made inquiries. Additionally, he has a market in the Bundesliga and Spain. 1 goal and 12 assists this season.”
Wagner, meanwhile, might well be a non-starter for the Sky Blues due to a historical controversy, having been suspended a year ago by Major League Soccer for allegedly “violating the league’s on-field anti discrimination policy.”
The Athletic reported at the time that a three match ban followed a complaint by the New England Revolution on October 30, 2023, alleging Wagner directed a racial slur at Bobby Wood.
The report said: “The slur Wagner allegedly directed at Wood was one historically directed toward Asian people. Wood is of Japanese and African American descent.”
In a statement, MLS said: “In reaching this decision, MLS considered many factors, including Wagner’s immediate acceptance of responsibility for the violation, willingness to participate in a restorative practices process to repair the harm caused, and his cooperation with the league’s investigation.” The MLS later announced that Wagner had completed the league’s new restorative practices program.
