Virginia Tech’s AD is standing behind his football coach after a second straight 6-6 season.

Going into the 2024 season, expectations were high for the Virginia Tech football team and some considered them a dark horse for the new 12-team College Football Playoff. However, a season-opening loss at Vanderbilt ended up setting the table for a second straight 6-6 season for the Hokies under third-year coach Brent Pry. For the second straight season, they needed to beat Virginia in the Commonwealth Cup Thanksgiving Weekend just to become bowl-eligible.

As you guessed, another 6-6 season after an off-season of hype with retainment, transfer portal additions, and a strong culture that we were told about for the last 12 months, didn’t sit well with the fans. It shouldn’t have. With the talent on the roster and potential NFL players on the roster, it is easy to consider this season a disappointment.

Wednesday Virginia Tech welcomed the Class of 2025 by the coaching staff and it appears that Pry will push to keep his staff intact when he met with the media earlier this week.

“I’m hopeful. We’ve got great people in this building and I think today’s a testament to everything that these families and these prospects feel about the people in this building. Got tremendous folks in this building. There’s certainly some things that we have to do better. Again, it starts with me.”

Virginia Tech AD gives Brent Pry vote of confidence going forward

Whether or not coaching changes going to happen with the assistant coaches, remains to be seen. However, on Friday, athletic director Whit Babcock spoke on a tone of topics in a 30-minute interview with Bill Roth and he said that he’ll be sitting down with Pry this upcoming week to discuss where the program is at. During the interview with Roth, Babcock gave Pry a vote of confidence and is standing by his head football coach.

“I believe in (Pry),” said Babcock.

It comes as no surprise that he is standing behind and believing in Pry. Recently, it was reported that Babcock and Pry were essentially a package deal and that if the school moved on from Pry, they likely would with Babcock as well. Virginia Tech’s AD knows that the standard as far as Virginia Tech football goes is not being met, although he thinks they’re close. Pry is 16-20 in three seasons at Tech with a bowl game later this month, but one thing is clear, he’ll be back in 2025 with a vote of confidence from his boss on Friday.
