Frank Lampard lauds ‘important’ attacking duo after Coventry City defeat to West Brom

Coventry were defeated by Midlands rivals West Brom 2-0 on Wednesday night

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has spoken his praise for two of the Sky Blues’ forward talents after they were defeated by West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday evening.

It was a tightly-contested Midlands derby in which only a stroke of luck and a moment of brilliance were enough to give the Baggies the victory. Whilst it was West Brom’s first win since September at the end of a run of 10 draws out of 11 games, the 2-0 defeat was Lampard’s first in charge of Coventry in his third match after replacing the controversially-sacked Mark Robins last month.

The visitors to The Hawthorns were not shy of chances themselves, with striker Norman Bassette making himself a nuisance, having a shot saved in the first half after chopping onto his left foot. Their biggest chance came when Victor Torp nodded a header wide from close range, taking it off Jack Rudoni who was alongside him in a better position and surely would have found the net.

“I’ve played with so many and coached many and he has so many great attributes and those things will come with him and I’m confident in him,” the ex-Chelsea and Everton manager said after the fixture to Coventry’s official club website.

“He does so many good things in the game for us and he is a hungry boy, and he wants to do well, and that last bit will be something to improve on and I know he’s very keen to do that.”

The 20-year-old joined Coventry in the summer from French side Caen, scoring just one goal in a varying amount of minutes as he competes with the likes of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright for a starting place.

Joining the action alongside Bassette from the bench was fellow forward Brandon Thomas-Asante who arrived at the Coventry Building Society Arena alongside the Belgian in the summer. The Ghanaian international joined from opponents West Brom and Wednesday’s loss was his first visit back to The Hawthorns since the move.
