Browns place Nick Chubb on IR, sign TE to practice squad

The team officially placed Nick Chubb on IR, signed tight end to the practice squad

The Cleveland Browns have officially placed RB Nick Chubb on IR this morning with his foot injury and announced the signing of TE Brenden Bates off the New York Jets practice squad.

Chubb suffered a broken foot in Week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs and will be out for the rest of the season to begin the healing process. It’s no secret that this has been a rough year not only for Nick, but for the entire offense as well.

It’s probably a good thing that he rests up and prepares for the 2025 season because the team’s going to need him more than ever going forward.

In addition to the Chubb move, Cleveland also added rookie TE Brenden Bates from the Jets’ PS this morning.

He’s a local kid from Cincinnati, Ohio, who played his college ball at Kentucky. Following the 2024 NFL Draft Bates originally signed with the Chicago Bears as a UDFA. He stayed with the Bears until the final round of roster cuts where he was waived and then immediately claimed by the Jets.

He’s a 6’5”, 250-pound tight end who’s known for his blocking ability as an in-line or wing player at the line of scrimmage.

Rumors have heated up over the last few days among a key figure on the coaching staff of the Cleveland Browns. Mike Vrabel was hired by the team to consult head coach Kevin Stefanski and GM Andrew Berry during this 2024 season that has turned into a disaster for the Browns.

Cleveland fans have wondered about Vrabel taking over their team.

Vrabel was left on the outside of last year’s hiring cycle after his shocking dismissal from the Tennessee Titans. Bill Belichick was hired by North Carolina last week and will be joining the college ranks, making Vrabel the hottest commodity for football teams looking for a head coach.

The success of Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions has only fueled a shift of organizations looking for a culture leader. Vrabel must weigh the options of current openings versus the attractiveness of potential openings before committing.

Rumored interest has intensified and his looming decision may implicate others from Cleveland’s coaching staff or front office as we detailed during training camp.

Yesterday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated revealed that he believes the Chicago Bears will have Vrabel at the top of their list to replace the recently fired Matt Eberflus during his appearance on ESPN 1000’s morning show, Kap and J. Hood.

When asked about a possible offensive coordinator, Breer mentioned the possibility of Josh McDaniels as well as current Browns’ tight end coach and pass-game coordinator Tommy Rees. Interestingly, it was also revealed that Rees had interviewed multiple times for the head gig at UNC before Belichick agreed to take the job.
