Ex-Premier League referee delivers Charlie Hughes verdict after latest Hull City setback
The Tigers will be hoping their luck turns in their favour this weekend.
Former Premier League referee Chris Foy says Hull City can have no complaints about the penalty decision during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Coventry City which left the Tigers rooted to the foot of the Championship ahead of Saturday’s festive encounter against Swansea City at the MKM Stadium.
Ruben Selles’ side were drawing 1-1 with the Sky Blues when Charlie Hughes rashly brought down Norman Bassette inside the box just after the hour mark.
Goalkeeper Ivor Pandur brilliantly saved Victor Torp’s penalty before Jack Rudoni headed in what proved to be the winner, adding to Mason Ephron-Clark’s goal, which cancelled out Joao Pedro’s opener before the break, to leave the Tigers without a win in 13 games, suffering their seventh defeat in eight and inflicting a first defeat on Selles.
Hughes had been booked just a minute before the penalty incident after a rash challenge on Bassette wide on the left flank before his rash lunge on the Sky Blues striker, but Foy said referee Bobby Madley was right to issue a second yellow and send the 21-year-old defender off.
“Firstly, the Hull City defender (Hughes) can have no complaints at the award of a penalty, as he mistimes his tackle and does not make any contact with the ball, making contact that trips his opponent,” the ex-top flight official explained.
“Although he is already on a yellow card, the tackle does not meet the threshold for a second yellow – it is not reckless and the player (Bassette) is moving away from goal, so it is not an obvious goal-scoring opportunity being denied. Therefore, a penalty kick, with no caution is the correct call.”
City return to action against the Swans in another early kick-off, playing their final home game of 2024 looking for just a second MKM Stadium win of the campaign.
