Vitor Pereira makes Wolves history in dominant victory over Leicester
Wolves manager Vitor Pereira oversaw an incredible 3-0 win against Leicester on Sunday in his first match in charge of the club.
Pereira’s first match in charge of the Old Gold could not have gone much better. The new Wolves manager oversaw one of the best performances the club have produced in months as they battered fellow relegation rivals Leicester.
Fans could be heard chanting Pereira’s name as the manager quickly settled into his surroundings after being appointed less than a week ago.
Premier League survival is no doubt the goal, and the club has now taken a big step to achieving this.
However, the victory did not only give Wolves three points, but the club also made history with the result.
Wolves hold a three-goal lead at half-time for the first time in a Premier League away match
Despite Pereira’s appointment, few fans were optimistic about the game. The club had lost four games on the bounce and were five points from safety.
Yet, Wolves were in dreamland at the break. Goals from Goncalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomes and Matheus Cunha essentially ended the game just before the break.
For Wolves to be leading by three goals at half-time is extremely rare. The last time it happened was in the Bruno Lage era when they battered Watford 4-0.
Away from home, is it even rarer, with Nuno Espirito Santo the last to oversee this feat in a 4-0 victory over Burton Albion in the Championship back in 2017.
However, in the Premier League, this had never been achieved away from home until Pereira masterminded the victory over Leicester on Sunday.
Vitor Pereira sends a statement to the Premier League
Many fans throughout England were likely baffled by the appointment of Pereira. The manager came in with a less-than-impressive CV and had spent the first-half of the campaign at Saudi side Al Shabab.
Yet, despite only being in charge for a few days, he has already shown signs that he can guide Wolves to survival.
The Old Gold’s backline issues had disappeared as they kept their first away clean sheet of the season.
On top of this, the club looked far more comfortable at set-pieces, an issue that had plagued their campaign to date.
While it is impossible to judge Pereira after one game, he has certainly made a statement to the rest of the Premier League.
