Mansfield Town find themselves in tough competition against a top flight side, as they begin their activities during the January transfer window.

The Stags gained promotion into League One last season and have since taken the division by storm at times, finding themselves 11th in the table and just six points off the play-off places with a game in-hand.

A narrow defeat against Reading on Sunday brought to an end their three-match unbeaten run, where they had taken seven points including a huge away win against Peterborough United.

Mansfield face top flight competition

As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Mansfield Town face competition from SPFL side St. Mirren in the race to sign Gateshead striker Owen Oseni on a permanent deal during the January transfer window.

Oseni joined Gateshead from Championship side Derby County in the summer as a replacement for loanee Dajaune Brown and he has since had a strong start to the campaign in the National League.

However, Gateshead’s asking price of £65,000 has been met by the Scottish side, whilst Mansfield Town are also keen to beat their top flight counterparts and land the forward for themselves.

How has he fared this season?

Since making the switch to Gateshead during the summer, Oseni has made 24 league appearances for the club so far this season as well as a couple of outings in cup competitions.

Within his 24 league outings, Oseni has scored 12 goals including five in his last four National League matches.

He is currently averaging 2.5 shots per game, from which 0.5 end up in the back of the net. He also averages four duels wins and 1.2 successful dribbles, suggesting he is a handful up front and is more than just a goalscorer.

The 21-year-old is unproven as a first-team footballer aside from his spell with Gateshead thus far, with Oseni only featuring in short Non-League loan stints before the summer.

However, he is currently averaging a goal every two matches at National League level and has consistently shown positive performances, becoming Gateshead’s leading man – especially after Dajaune Brown and Marcus Dinanga left the club in the summer.

£65,000 is the quoted asking price for the 21-year-old and his early promise shows a strong potential for growth and development at a higher level moving
