Former Alabama defensive lineman re-signs with Chiefs
Neither Isaiah Buggs nor Montrell Washington played in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday. But if Kansas City makes its promised run at a three-peat in the 2024 season, they might be on the field for the next NFL championship game.
Buggs and Washington were on the Chiefs’ practice squad during Kansas City’s postseason victories and, on Wednesday, the same day the team and the city celebrated another NFL championship, were among the eight players announced as having signed reserve/future contracts to stay with the club.
A player signed to a reserve/future contract can be added to an NFL team’s roster when it expands from 53 to 90 players for the offseason on the first day of the NFL’s 2024 business year on March 13. The newly signed players become eligible to participate in offseason workouts, minicamps and OTAs.
Only players who aren’t on NFL active rosters can sign reserve/future contracts.
A former Alabama defensive lineman, Buggs spent most of his fifth NFL season with the Detroit Lions. He had played in 10 games, with three starts, when Detroit waived him on Jan. 2. Kansas City signed Buggs for its practice squad two days later, and he stayed with the Chiefs through the Super Bowl.
A former Samford wide receiver, Washington joined Kansas City’s practice squad after being waived by the Denver Broncos at the end of the preseason and spent the entire campaign with the Chiefs, including a portion of the season on the active roster. In six regular-season games, he returned eight punts for 61 yards and one kickoff for 20 yards.
