Ex-Red Wings forward scores biggest goal of season for Canucks

A pair of former Detroit Red Wings have helped the Vancouver Canucks reach the second round of the playoffs for only the second time in 13 seasons.

Filip Hronek had a strong season as Quinn Hughes defense partner. And, on Friday, Pius Suter netted the Canucks’ most important goal of the season.

Suter scored with 1:39 remaining in the third period and the Canucks defeated the Nashville Predators 1-0 in Game 6 of their first-round series. They will face the Edmonton Oilers in the second round.

Suter skated into the slot area and redirected a backhand pass from Brock Boeser past Juuse Saros. It was his second goal of the playoffs. He had 14 goals and15 assists in the regular season

Suter, 27, played two seasons in Detroit (29 goals, 31 assists in 161 games) as mostly a bottom-six forward but a versatile player who moved up and down the lineup, back and forth from center to wing, killed penalties and could play on the power play.

The Red Wings tried to re-sign him for one year, but he held out for a two-year deal with the Canucks for a $1.6 million annual average value.

2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs – Maple Leafs vs. Bruins | How to watch Saturday’s game, channel, preview

Here we go again. The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins. Division rivals. Original Six foes. Another Game 7 set for Saturday night to see who advances to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Since 2013, the Bruins and Maple Leafs have met in the seventh game of the opening round of the playoffs three times, with Boston coming out each time on home ice. There are many similarities between this series, and those of yesteryear.

In both 2013 and 2018, the Bruins went up in the series 3-1, with the Leafs storming back to force a Game 7 but came up short, infamously blowing a 4-1 lead 11 years ago. This year, Boston went up 3-1, but a Matthew Knies goal in overtime kept Toronto alive. Then, at home on Thursday, two goals from William Nylander helped the Leafs to another 2-1 victory, snapping a six-game home losing streak in the postseason.

While the Leafs are trying to vanquish their playoff demons, the Bruins are trying to keep the past behind them. After winning the President’s Trophy last season, they grabbed a 3-1 lead against the Florida Panthers in Round 1. Boston squandered it, and the Panthers would go on to win the series, and make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Bruins are 15-15 in Game 7′s, and are 4-1 against the Leafs. The last time Toronto beat Boston in a series that went the distance was 1959, the last time the Leafs eliminated the Bruins from the playoffs. Toronto is 12-14 in Game 7′s.
