Second Aston Villa player leaves international duty for ‘medical assessment’ after Ollie Watkins

The latest Aston Villa injury news as Jaden Philogene is sent home from England Under-21s duty in the wake of his recent issue

Jaden Philogene has returned to Aston Villa from England Under-21s to undergo ‘further medical assessment’, the FA have confirmed.

Earlier in the week Villa suffered a scare when Ollie Watkins was announced to have left interim Three Lions manager Lee Carsley’s senior squad. He had at least taken part in the 2-1 win at Leicester before the international break, unlike Philogene, who wasn’t deemed fit enough.

The 22-year-old – who returned to the club this summer in an £18m deal from Hull City – had reported for international duty despite the problem, though the FA have announced his early release in order to return to the watch of club doctors.

The Young Lions – led by Ben Futcher in the wake of Carsley’s promotion – are due to play Northern Ireland and Austria in the current break. Unfortunately Philogene will miss out, as will Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson and Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle.

After the last Premier League fixture, Unai Emery explained his winger’s absence. “He had a kick on Wednesday and he didn’t train, but we were thinking progressively that he could be available for today. In the end he told us he couldn’t play with the same pain,” the Spaniard explained, before clarifying he hoped for his player’s return to health in time for Everton’s visit to Villa Park after the international break.

Also nursing an issue after the match at the King Power Stadium was Leon Bailey, who was forced off early in the encounter. The 27-year-old had been in line to return to the Jamaican national team after almost a year’s absence, but his hamstring problem proved too great a setback.
