£2m Sunderland man at risk of becoming a forgotten man in 2024/25 season

This Sunderland player, who the club paid £2million for, could face a very contested 2024/25 season in the Championship.

Sunderland get underway under new

in August, with the Black Cats’ season starting with a trip to Cardiff City on the 10th.

It’s the start of a new chapter for the club and also for Le Bris, with fans not knowing what to expect from the Frenchman in what is his first English job, and only the second managerial job of his career.

So far this summer, Sunderland have signed two new players in Simon Moore and Alan Browne, with both players joining on free transfers and adding much-needed experience to the Sunderland first-team squad.

Whilst more signings are expected, there’s definitely a lot of existing talent at the Stadium of Light which Le Bris will be keen to nurture and further develop.

But one player appears to face a very contested 2024/25 season under Le Bris; Romaine Mundle.

Former Tottenham Hotspur gem Mundle joined Sunderland from Standard Liege in January, with the Black Cats paying a reported fee of £2million.

On the surface, it seemed like the Mundle signing was with a view to Jack Clarke eventually leaving the club.

But Mundle would show little in his first half-season on Wearside to suggest that he has the ability to eventually replace the goals and creativity of Clarke.

The 21-year-old Mundle featured 11 times in the Championship. He scored one goal and played just 10 minutes of the Black Cats’ final six games of the season.

Why Romaine Mundle could face a difficult 2024/25 season under Regis Le Bris at Sunderland

Le Bris looks set to don his usual 3-4-2-1 formation at Sunderland, and to place a lot of emphasis on those two attacking midfielders.

As things stand, Clarke takes one of those places, likely on the left, leaving the other up for grabs.

Patrick Roberts may be eyeing a return to form under Le Bris should this new shape and tempo suit his game.

There’s also the likes of Chris Rigg, Jobe Bellingham, Abdoullah Ba, and Nazariy Rusyn to fit into the system someway or another.

Rigg and Bellingham may be expecting plenty of game-time next season after Rigg signed a new deal, and with Bellingham having interest from the Premier League.

So all of a sudden, it seems like Mundle may be well down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light.

He has pre-season to impress the new boss and Kristjaan Speakman will also be keen for Mundle to shine given how much money Sunderland have invested in him.

There’s still plenty of time for him to do so, with Mundle under contract until 2028. But next season could be a testing one for him.
