“Doesn’t affect me” – Player not bothered by Brighton treatment, washes over him
Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has insisted he’s not bothered by the boos he’s received in Germany while with Spain, as he’d been treated the same way by Brighton and Hove Albion fans.
The full-back has been speaking to La Vanguardia about his experiences at Euro 2024 this summer and his treatment by the German fans.
The Chelsea man has been thoroughly enjoying himself at the tournament in Germany this summer after being handed the starting role in Luis de la Fuente’s team.
That came as something as a surprise given the competition, Alex Grimaldo, had just come off the back of an impressive campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.
Cucurella has fully justified his place in the team, though, playing his part in the team that has undoubtedly been the best at Euro 2024 this summer.
He’s been earning rave reviews and plenty of fans back home but not among the local population, who have turned their ire towards the full-back after Germany were knocked out by Spain in the quarterfinals.
They were incensed that the Chelsea man wasn’t punished for an apparent handball and showed that anger afterwards, booing him when La Roja took on France in the semi-finals four days later.
That, though, hasn’t affected the defender, who insists he’s accustomed to such treatment after being given a similar experience by Brighton fans after he left them for Stamford Bridge.
“When I returned to the Brighton pitch with Chelsea I had been booed a lot too, even more,” he said.
“I think a lot of people had bought their tickets ahead of time and I imagine they were whistling through my hands. But these are things that happen, it’s not something that affects me.
“The truth is that going to a field where your team is not playing and, instead of enjoying a semi-final, spend the time whistling, I don’t think it’s necessary. I’m not saying this for myself, but you could be enjoying a really good game.”
