Wrexham defender Will Boyle may be set for a new role under Phil Parkinson in his second season at the club.

After a successful 2023/24 campaign, Will Boyle will be hoping he can continue his form at Wrexham this season.

The 28-year-old signed at the Racecourse from Huddersfield Town last summer and provided consistent performances in Parkinson’s backline alongside Eoghan O’Connell and Tom O’Connor.

The North Wales club have recently snapped up Leicester City defender Lewis Brunt to reinforce the defence, with youngster Max Cleworth also committing his future to the club with a new contract.

The former Wigan Athletic star will likely remain a key part of the Red Dragons’ back three next season. After the recent summer departures of Ben Tozer and Aaron Hayden he has an important new role to play in the dressing room.

The summer addition of Brunt has added a new look to Wrexham’s defence with his abillities to carry the ball out of the defence.

Cleworth, 22, is also very good on the ball so he could help build a solid foundation for Wrexham to build around.

Boyle and O’Connel are strong physical defenders and can provide balance to a changing Wrexham backline.

The important role the former Huddersfield man will play is to help guide the younger defenders and advise them with his vital experience.

With Tozer and Hayden no longer in the dressing room, he can step up and offer leadership in defence.

Parkinson will be looking to the more senior players to help embed the younger generation into the first-team.

It is an important step for the club to progress and Boyle is a strong character who can help lead this process.

Will Boyle a candidate for Wrexham captaincy

After Tozer and club captain Luke Young departed the Racecourse this summer, the former Sunderland coach will be looking to appoint a new captain.

Paul Mullin is a leading contender alongside James McClean, but Boyle could be a candidate for the manager to consider.

The six-foot-three defender was a constant figure in the starting XI in League Two and will likely be a reliable member of Parkinson’s side this campaign.

His wealth of experience with various clubs make him a senior member of the squad with the star being well respected in the dressing room for his time in higher divisions.

The English defender will be able to mentor the younger players and become a leader in the dressing room.
