Wrexham suffer major injury scare as Phil Parkinson provides update before US tour

A knock suffered by a Wrexham stalwart will have left some fans fearing the worst on the eve of the Red Dragons’ American tour, as head coach Phil Parkinson put the record straight

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed that an injury to Elliot Lee is expected to be “nothing serious” with the midfielder set to make the team’s tour of the United States.

The Red Dragons will head across the Atlantic for the second year running after gaining a cult following in the country as a result of the club’s Hollywood ties. After world-famous actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney staged their takeover at the Racecourse Ground, the club has experienced a transformative surge in popularity alongside success on the pitch.

Following back-to-back promotions, it is likely that the Welsh outfit’s fanbase stateside will be eager to welcome the team as they face Bournemouth and Chelsea in California. Following on from this, a trip over the border to Canada is also in the offing for a friendly with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

In a final piece of preparation before embarking on the summer tour next week, Wrexham faced off in a warm-up match versus non-league side Hanley Town. In front of a sell-out crowd of 1,750, the Reds ran out 5-1 winners as two separate XIs were fielded by Parkinson in each half.

Despite a positive showing in the friendly, the thigh strain picked up by the aforementioned Lee was a cause for concern following the game. However, the Wrexham head coach confirmed to The Athletic that he will be on the plane heading for the US in the coming days – with other doubts Tom O’Connor, Lewis Brunt, Will Boyle and Jacob Mendy also set to travel.

However, one star who will not be making the trip this summer is talisman Paul Mullin, who is instead recovering after undergoing spinal surgery in June. It is hoped that he will only miss the start of the season, with the forward having been sidelined for nine games at the beginning of the previous campaign too after picking up a punctured lung on the last US tour.
