Being a hockey referee is hard on any level. The game is fast, and mistakes are made. However, on the highest level, especially in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a controversial goal that Sam Bennett scored we saw in Game 4 of Round 2 between the Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers was easily fixable.

If you did not see, Sam Bennett, who was already public enemy number one in Boston because he punched the face of Brad Marchand, scored a controversial goal that was upheld by the situation room.

As the video shows, Sam Bennett shoves Bruins forward Charlie Coyle into Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman, creating separation between the man and the puck. Bennett then shoots the puck into an empty net, tying the game at 2-2.

The Bruins challenge for goaltender interference. As they should according to Rule 69.1.

However, the NHL Situation Room left it up to the officials to overturn the call or keep it a good goal. Remember, the call on the ice was a goal. So, there needed to be clear evidence to overturn it.

While the Situation Room acknowledged a shove happened, they did not feel there was enough evidence to overturn the call on the ice.

Thus, the goal was upheld, and the Bruins were penalized for a delay in the game.

Again, looking at the rule and what former official Tim Peel said on the Full Press NHL Podcast, the goaltender has to be able to play his position. You can judge if Swayman could play his position, but a penalty was not called, which led to a goal at a significant moment in the game.
