Leicester City faced with FA charge after Aston Villa incident set punishment precedent

Leicester City played host to Aston Villa in a Premier League meeting on Saturday, August 31st.

The Foxes were back in Premier League action this past weekend after progressing into the third round of the League Cup following a 4-0 thrashing of Tranmere Rovers.

Steve Cooper is yet to taste victory in the Premier League as Leicester City manager but did secure a huge 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the campaign.

The Midlands outfit have since struggled in their following two games of 2024/25, however.

Leicester lost 2-1 versus Fulham before falling to defeat by the same scoreline against Aston Villa on August 31st.

Goals from Amadou Onana and Jhon Duran put Aston Villa 2-0 up with just over an hour gone at the King Power Stadium.

Facundo Buonanotte came off the bench to pull one back for the Foxes in the 73rd minute but it was still Unai Emery and co. who came away with the points, with Leicester fans left frustrated by one Cooper decision from the game.

As well as the fans being left frustrated on Saturday, the club are now set to have some frustrations of their own.

This comes after Leicestershire Live report that Leicester have been charged by the FA following an incident that occurred during the meeting with Aston Villa.

The incident in question took place in the 93rd minute when former Fox Youri Tielemans stretched to clear a Harry Winks pass, bringing Jamie Vardy down in the process.

The Belgian midfielder made contact with the ball but went through the back of his ex-teammate Vardy at the same time.

After no penalty was given, Leicester players surrounded referee David Coote but he did not change his mind.

Now, the FA alleges that Leicester ‘failed to ensure its players did not behave in an improper way.’

Leicester now have until Thursday, September 5th, to respond to the charges made against them.

If Cooper and co. do not appeal the charge or do appeal and are still found guilty, they will most likely be fined.

How much Leicester will be forced to pay is still up in the air but there is a precedent set.

Manchester City admitted to the same offense in December 2023 after their players surrounded the referee during a 3-3 draw with Tottenham.

The Sky Blues were made to pay £120,000 as punishment, suggesting a figure somewhere in that region will also be what Leicester have to cough up.
