Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner drops ‘terrible’ injury update ahead of Aston Villa game
Crystal Palace have won five of their last six games and go into the Aston Villa game looking to equal their best points tally in Premier League history.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner says midfielder Will Hughes’ injury looked terrible on television but fortunately, it wasn’t as bad when the medical team checked him before ruling him out against Aston Villa this weekend.
The Eagles are looking to make it six wins from their last six games and could equal their best points tally in the Premier League era with three points (49). This has been a remarkable turnaround given they looked to be a relegation fight before the Austrian manager walked through the door.
Hughes who was on the peripheral has since been sensational and his manager expects him to be back for pre-season. The Palace boss told reporters at the final pre-game press conference of the season: “Will is out. It looked terrible on the video fortunately, everything is ok with the ligament. He’ll be out for several weeks but should be back for pre-season.”
Aston Villa come to Selhurst with little to play for having already beaten Tottenham to Champions League football for next season. Unai Emery’s side will however want to end the campaign on a high which makes this one a highly entertaining prospect.
Crystal Palace have won more Premier League home games against Aston Villa than they have against any other opponent (seven), including six of their past eight against them at Selhurst Park.
Given the form the Eagles are on, you won’t bet against them continuing that with the trio of Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi expected to start. All three are transfer targets for top six clubs and it remains unclear if they will be at the club at the start of next season.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed arguably the best season of his career to date, notching 10 goals and five assists in just 18 Premier League matches for Crystal Palace.
As a result of his fine form, many tipped Olise to play for Les Blues at this summer’s European Championship in Germany.
But the winger was overlooked by manager Didier Deschamps, who opted for the likes of Kingsley Coman, Bradley Barcola, Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembele.
It was a decision that sparked plenty of reaction online. In fact, fans from Nigeria, Algeria and England urged Olise to switch international allegiance after being snubbed by France.
Olise, who has represented France at under-18 and under-21 level, is still able to play for England, Nigeria and Algeria. He was born in London to a Nigerian father and French-Algerian mother.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate tried to convince the Crystal Palace winger to switch international allegiance in 2022, according to the Daily Mail.
