Sheffield Wednesday should turn to Cardiff City if Ian Poveda chase fails: View
Callum Robinson could be in need of a fresh start away from the Welsh capital this summer
Sheffield Wednesday want to keep key loan signings Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda, especially with Poveda set to be a free agent. If Poveda doesn’t stay, experienced Championship player Callum Robinson could be a good alternative for the Owls. Poveda may attract interest from other clubs, prompting Sheffield Wednesday to look elsewhere for talent like Robinson as a backup plan.
Sheffield Wednesday are still celebrating after completing the great escape and maintaining their Championship status, but attention will soon turn to building a squad for next season.
Danny Rohl made two crucial loan signings in the January window, with both Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda playing huge roles in the Owls surviving, and the club would certainly like to keep them at Hillsborough next season.
Poveda joined the club on loan from Yorkshire rivals Leeds United, and the Colombian international made a big impact, featuring ten times for the Owls, registering one assist.
The 24-year-old is out of contract at Elland Road this season, and is set to become a free agent, so it remains to be seen where he’ll end up next season.
However, if Rohl is unable to get a deal over the line for Poveda, there may be a ready-made replacement waiting at one of their Championship rivals in Callum Robinson.
Sheffield Wednesday could turn to Callum Robinson this summer
Callum Robinson has a wealth of Championship experience, and the Republic of Ireland international has spent the last two seasons at Cardiff City.
If Wednesday are unable to get a deal over the line for Poveda, then Robinson could well be a good signing, particularly as he seems to have fallen out of favour under Erol Bulut at Cardiff recently.
The 29-year-old is vastly experienced at this level, and has also played for Bristol City, Preston, West Brom, Aston Villa and Sheffield United – which may not go down too well with the Owls’ faithful.
In total, Robinson has made 238 Championship appearances, scoring 49 goals, and registering 35 assists, so he would be a good addition to most sides in the division.
