Barnsley are right in the fight for promotion from League One, with a place in the top two still up for grabs as the season nears a dramatic end.

Barnsley have been in and around the play-offs all season but with eight games left, they’re still in with a shot at automatic promotion. They’re seven points off 2nd placed Derby County, but they boast two games in hand as they sit 5th in the League One table.

Barring a real collapse, the Tykes will finish in the top six at least. It will give them a shot at redemption after falling short in the play-off final last year if they are to miss out on a top two spot.

As often is the case with sides who miss out on promotion though, Barnsley may well lose some key assets if they aren’t to rise from League One. Among them is midfielder Herbie Kane, who sees his contract at Oakwell expire at the end of this season.

Destined for a step up?

Kane has been a key player for Neill Collins and co this season. His return of nine goals and five assists in 38 games has made him a vital asset in the middle of the park.

The 25-year-old joined the club from Liverpool in the summer of 2020 and has played Championship football with Barnsley. His displays in the third-tier have proven it’s a level he deserves to be at, and circumstances this summer may well pave the way for him to return there.
