Crystal Palace set for major Adam Wharton injury boost despite withdrawing from England U21 squad
Crystal Palace hope Adam Wharton will still be fit to face Leicester later this month after he dropped out of the England Under-21 squad with a groin injury.
Wharton has been taking painkillers to get through games and Palace boss Oliver Glasner said the midfielder had “fitness issues” following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea.
But Palace are optimistic Wharton will be available when they host Leicester at Selhurst Park on September 14 in their first game after the international break.
Wharton was a surprise omission from Lee Carsley’s first England senior squad before being selected for the U21s.
But he has now pulled out of their games against Northern Ireland and Austria.
“Since he came back from the Euros, he has had some issues with his body — not big issues but a little bit here, a little bit there”, Glasner said at the weekend.
“He’s not in his top fitness level. He’s been training with us for three weeks but hasn’t been able to do every single training.”
Carsley said last week of leaving Wharton out of his squad: “I thought about him long and hard. He was a player we watched a lot last season.
“He’s a player who will be really important to us in the future. I think it will be good for him to go and have a few games for the U21s.”
Wharton joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January and made his England debut in June before being an unused substitute throughout their run to the final of Euro 2024.

Crystal Palace owners could bankroll redevelopment after big news – Borson
Crystal Palace need to find the right balance in their plans to redevelop Selhurst Park to ensure they don’t build up too much external debt.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it will become a question of how much equity Palace’s owners want to put in.
Croydon Council confirmed on 16 August it has granted the south London club planning permission to build a new glass-fronted Main Stand at Selhurst Park.
The development will take the number of seats in the stand from 5,200 to 13,500, ensuring the stadium’s capacity will rise to more than 34,000.
Crystal Palace have right owners to find necessary balance
Borson believes Palace have the right people in charge to find the necessary balance as the club continues to modernise Selhurst Park.
