Erol Bulut admitted his Cardiff side enjoyed ‘a lot of luck’ after being gifted two own goals to secure the full three points against Coventry City.

The Sky Blues took the lead in the 22nd minute when Ellis Simms started and finished an impressive move but Liam Kitching scored two own goals – one in the 28th minute and the other in the 67th – to hand the Bluebirds victory at the CBS Arena, and dent the home side’s attempt to close the gap on sixth placed Norwich in the race for the play-offs.

“I am happy because it is a great victory to come to Coventry and win,” said a delighted Bulut. “To come back from 1-0 down in the game was not easy because when we look at Coventry’s last games and how they are pushing for the play-offs, so it was a big victory for us.

“It was not easy coming here after two defeats in a row, especially the Swansea derby when morale was low and then against Sunderland when everyone was expecting a win, so that’s why it was really important to bounce back against Coventry.”

Commenting on Josh Bowler’s influence on both own goals, the German-born coach said: “We counted on him 50 percent for both goals, which makes one goal. He was good today and we expect him to be really good on the ball when he’s one v one. The first own goal was a lot of luck and the second one was bigger luck because it was a cross in and the defender touched it and it went into the goal. But you have to be in that position to get that chance, and that’s what he did.”

He added: “We are one of the best at set-pieces in the league so today was good. We have had too many ups and downs in terms of individual performances over the course of the season so we need more consistency, and if that was the case then we would be talking about a different situation now (in terms of the play-offs).
