The Mountaineers are making their debut in the NCAA Tournament’s super regional round, and have star power to lean on in JJ Wetherholt and Derek Clark.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina takes on visiting West Virginia in a best-of-3 NCAA Tournament super regional series this weekend, with a trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., on the line.

West Virginia (36-22) arrives at Boshamer Stadium fresh off sweeping through the the regional hosted by Arizona, the tournament’s No. 13 overall national seed. The Mountaineers of the Big 12 Conference defeated Dallas Baptist (by a 4-1 score) and Grand Canyon twice (by margins of 5-2 and 10-6), en route to claiming the regional crown. Meanwhile, Arizona dropped its first two games of the regional and was the first host team eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

“They’re balanced top to bottom, extremely well-coached,” UNC coach Scott Forbes said Thursday, after the Tar Heels practiced. “They’re here for a reason. When you’ve coached a long time and you’ve been blessed to be in these games, the common factor is everybody’s good. Everybody usually has an elite player or two. They’re balanced offensively and they’re pretty deep on the mound. Really, they’re just a good, balanced club.”
