The return of Sheffield Wednesday players and staff to Middlewood Road has signalled the start of preparations for the 2024/25 season – with old and new faces present.

Players have been put through their paces at the initial testing and fitness preparation stage of their return to pre-season. Behind-the-scenes footage released by the club’s media team show new signings Ben Hamer and Max Lowe meeting their new teammates having sealed free transfer deals.

Also shown in the coverage is Chris Powell. An important member of Danny Röhl’s coaching set-up, the former Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town manager told a national radio station in the days after Wednesday sealed their historic survival last season that his contract was approaching its end in June – a stipulation he made himself on the basis he hadn’t yet worked with Röhl and thought it wise to see how things went without committing to a longer stint.

The Star since reported that Powell was expected to be handed fresh terms to continue at S6, something later confirmed by the 54-year-old. It remains unclear as to what stage a proposed new deal is at, though his presence at Middlewood Road is surely a sign beyond any lingering doubt that he will stay on this season.

Amid widespread speculation regarding his future, Röhl signed a new three-year deal to stay on at Wednesday last month. The German manager has spoken glowingly about the make-up of his backroom team and its importance. It’s believed that understood that other coaching staff were initially contracted in line with Röhl until the summer of 2025.
